Abstract
Abstract
This paper attempts to analyze the image of the beast and its symbolic meanings in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. The beast lies within us, which is the inevitably evil in human nature. Golding suggests that evilness could be found in even the purist, childhood stage, and that with or without law, society formed by man is bound to collapse because of the evilness hidden in every human’s heart. When humans are struggling to survive, the nature of violence would emerge and those who are tamed would be sacrificed.
Key Words: William Golding, Lord of the Flies, beast, evilness, human heart, violence, society
