Luck or Opportunity

 Chun-Ho Chang

“Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity”--by Oprah Winfrey. After I read the statement, I think that her idea about this topic lacks completeness. What is luck? What is opportunity? Luck and opportunity seem similar in meaning, but you’ll feel confused after you deeply think about them. In fact, their meanings are totally different, but these two words usually appear together in different order and different situations. I think we have to analyze them from many different points of view.

What is the meaning of luck? You can consider it as a kind of energy which causes good things to you, and it’s so subjective. People have attach different feelings to the same thing. For example, if it is a rainy day, and there is a restaurant without any customer, and you’re the waiter there, you may think about how lucky you are because you can do your work leisurely, but other waiters may think that they’re unfortunate because they may lose their job.

Opportunities are subjective too. They appear often in one’s life, but they may be ignored or missed easily. For example, you may meet your teachers on the road very often, but you may never ask the teacher question about what you don’t understand when you say hello to them. If you take a look around, you can find opportunities everywhere.

In fact, luck and opportunity usually appear together in most situations, And there are two kinds of conditions for these situations. The first one is that luck comes after opportunity. In this kind of condition, it is always concerned about money, for example, gambling. Before you win the money by your good luck, you have to use money to buy an opportunity to show your luck, and it’s the easiest way to become a rich person. So, a lot of people are addicted to gambling, and they rely on their luck to get rich.

The second situation is the more important one; your luck comes before your opportunity. It is just like when you are finding a job, a good company’s administrators announce they will recruit new members, and you are so lucky to have this opportunity to have an interview. In this second, you take the opportunity and you may find the job you like.

In the end, I think you understand what the difference is between luck and opportunity after you see the examples given above. Although luck may bring you a huge benefit without hard work, if you rely on your luck solely, you may end up losing everything. Opportunity is more controllable than luck. You can grab it if you want to, and it is also the best way to realize your ideal.
