Life

John Li

Very often I ask myself “What is life?” And very often I have come up with different answers like “Life is boring,” “Life is interesting,” “Life is meaningless,” “Life is meaningful;” all these are beside the question. “I don’t know” would be more honest. But looking back into my life one thing I am sure of is that life is a process. I liken this process to that of the making of a computer game and the running if the game.

The conception of a child is much like the making of a computer game. In both cases there is a programmer. “The Programmer” and a programmer. When a child comes into being, we take it for granted that The Programmer programmed it this way. Likewise, when a computer game comes on the market, we assume that a programmer wrote its programme. In both cases there is an “invisible hand” that has been working.

The process of a person’s life is just like the running of a computer game. As soon as a computer game is started we can not sit and nothing. In life it is just so. We have to always look ahead and walk forward; otherwise, we would run out of time and we would not achieve anything. In a computer game the course that is programmed is studded with obstacles; we can see some of them, but most are hidden. In life also we meet obstacles. We can foresee some of them, but there are many unforeseen ones. However, if we grab the joystick and learn to recognize the new environment and make our way through different stages, we will overcome failures and gain experience. We will be given two or more chances to start again or to continue on the course that we have chosen. Armed with the experience and dexterity acquired, we can forge our way to avoid obstacles; or we may run into more obstacles, from which we learn even more. Thus, when we meet other difficulties harder than before we instill perseverance in ourselves to overcome them until we reach the goal.

“What is life?” the answer to this question will depend on the experience of each individual. And just like the player of the computer game, whose success and failure are decided by the skill he masters and the experience he gains, each individual will give a meaning to the process he has gone through according to the efforts he has made and the obstacles he has overcome.
