Homosexual Marriage Should Be Legalized

Homosexual marriage is a marriage between two people of the same sex with legal recognition. In modern times, the legalization of it has been a highly controversial issue all over the world. Many people strongly oppose the idea of homosexual marriage because they believe that once it is legalized, it would be a threat to the traditional marriage system and the population would dramatically decrease since homosexual couples are not able to give birth to children. Some are against homosexual marriage for religious reasons. For instance, Christians believe that homosexuality is a sin which can never be tolerated, thus this kind of belief forms a strong refutation to the legalization of homosexual marriage. However, despite various opposing opinions about it, I still think that homosexual marriage should be legalized.

“Homosexual marriage is a human right,” said by United Nations, 2008, reminds us that we should not discriminate against homosexual people simply because they sexually appeal to people with the same sex. Homosexual people should be treated equally and they must share the same legal rights and be under judicial protection as heterosexual people regardless of their sexual orientation.

As for the decrease of the birth rate, we must note that low birth rate has already been a prominent issue among heterosexual couples in developed countries, thus it is an irrelevant premise. And even though homosexual couples are not able to give birth to children, they still can have babies through artificial fertilization.

The critical reason for me to support homosexual marriage is because if one day one of the homosexual couple is confronted with some accidents and needs his or her spouse to sign various legal contracts, they are able to make the contracts legally admitted. For example, once their spouse has a severe accident, they should be allowed legally to pay family visits. What’s more, their inheritance will be admitted as well.

As far as humanism is concerned, all men should be treated equally and share the same rights regardless of their sexual orientation. In my opinion, we should embrace all the varieties in our society instead of pursuing unity, not allowing any diversities to speak for their own. We all deserve to be granted happiness, and homosexual people are no exception. It’s time for us to carry out true and comprehensive equality, rather than be all talk and doing nothing. Therefore, by legalizing homosexual marriage, the new history would be written and this great deed would certainly be remembered.
