My Two Brothers

Dorcas Ding

I have two brothers. One is Mike, and the other is Peter. Mike is two years older than I, and Peter is two years younger than I. I am the middle child in my family. Mike and Peter haven’t been getting along well since childhood. They often persuaded me to choose one of them to play with. Mike and Peter conflict easily because their personality traits, habits, and interests are quite different.

Mike is introverted, and Peter is extroverted. Mike is quiet, and sometimes it is not easy for him to get along with others. He loves to enjoy Nature alone, so sometimes we don’t know his whereabouts. I remember when I was an elementary student, I went to school with Mike in one holiday. About one hour later, he disappeared, and I was anxious to find him. Suddenly, he appeared in front of me. When I unhappily asked him where he went, he never answered me but showed off a newly discovered creature, a caterpillar, in his hand. If this thing happened to Peter, I thought Peter would never go out with him any longer. Mike likes to read books about biology at home and he seldom goes out with friends. However, Peter is outgoing and has a lot of friends. When he turned eighteen years old, he got a scooter’s license and rode the motorcycle out with friends. Peter is active in making new friends by playing basketball. Thus, he will go outside rather than staying at home on holidays or weekends.

In the long vacations, holidays, and weekends, they easily become unhappy with the habits of each other. They share one room at home, but they have different sleeping habits. Mike goes to bed late, so he often gets up late. Peter usually gets up early to exercise. When Peter wakes up and prepares for going out, he often bothers Mike’s sleeping because of the noise. Thus, Mike will be mad at him. In the past, they would fight, but now they just argue with each other. They seldom communicate.

My two brothers don’t have mutual interests. Mike loves biology and languages, so he studies in the Department of Translation and Interpretation. By contrast, Peter loves physics and math, and he studies in the department of Electronic Engineering. Mike likes to play badminton. However, Peter likes to play baseball. It is really hard for them to find the same thing to do together. Even the TV channels they like are not the same, so they sometimes argue which channels they watch first. Mike likes Discovery channel, but Peter likes Sports channels. In the end, the solution is that my dad will turn to News channels, and then they will be quiet because they know my dad is not glad about their quarrels.

Now, they seldom complain or argue with each other, but they still have cold wars because of their different personality traits, habits, and interests. I don’t like any conflict between them because both of them are my brothers. I just hope they could accept their differences, be good brothers, and put themselves into each other’s shoes, although they have already had many unhappy memories.
