My Experiences of Living in an Extended Family

Ivy Liu

I remember that I lived with my grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins in my childhood. However, due to my father’s work, my parents decided to move from Miaoli to Taipei. Although my family is a nuclear family now, I still miss the time of living in an extended family. In my opinion, living in an extended family has three major merits, namely, my being well taken care of, helping each other, and close relationship.

When I was a baby, my health was not very good and I almost cried all day. My mother was a career woman at that time, so my grandparents took good care of me. My mother said that my grandmother always held me all day. If my grandmother put me down to the bed, I would begin to cry. My grandparents love us very much. We really thank them for their loving care for us. I think I should show concern and respect for elderly relatives, since I have had gained much from them.

In an extended family, of course, many people live together. If someone faces the problem, everybody will help him or her solve the problem. Sometimes, if we have questions or troubles, many people can give us different advice. Although sometimes we have a little argument, our sentiment is still good.

Nowadays, many people are very busy. I think if relatives live in different places, we would gradually lose contact with one another. I remember that we often went out together before, but now, we only meet one another on the Chinese New Year.

So I really miss living in an extended family. In brief, I think living in an extended family absolutely has a positive influence on both the elderly and the younger generation.
