Three Kinds of Motorbike Riders in Taiwan

            By Jerome Chen

There are more than ten million motorbikes in Taiwan. It means motorbikes are the commonest transport in this country. I believe that every rider has his/her own riding style. I think it is interesting to observe and to classify those riders. According to my observation, the riders who abide by the law are the most popular riders. Those people never break the laws. They will stop their bikes before the traffic light turns red, and they will never cross the white line on the road. Those nice riders will give the way to pedestrians. I think every citizen loves such perfect riders. Compared to the lovely riders, there are some riders who are not so admirable. I call those riders the opportunistic type. Those riders follow the rules not because they want to observe the law. They abide by the law because they don’t want to get fines. Those opportunistic riders sometimes give the way to pedestrians, and they sometimes stop their bikes before the traffic light turns red. However, they will drive above the speed limit when the policemen are not watching. I think most people are this type of riders. However, this is still nothing, if compared to the last type of riders. I call those people supermen. They regard traffic laws as nothing. They feel no fear about speed. I think they feel no fear about death, maybe. Everyone hates this kind of riders because their fearless riding style may cause car accidents. Actually, I ride to school every day, and I see a lot of motorbikes on roads every day. It is really interesting to classify those riders.
