Luck or Opportunity?

Alice Chen

Do you think a person’s success is based on luck or good preparation? I think sufficient preparation is the key to success. Something great will not happen to you if you do not prepare anything and just wait. You have to work hard and prepare well. It is said that “Luck favors the well-prepared.” Though luck is also important, I believe good preparation determines if you are successful or not.

Someone would say that the success is based on luck. It is possible; for example, one day you help the old man to cross the road and the old man whom you help turns out to be a boss of a big company. He thinks that you are a warmhearted person and wants you to be his assistant at his company. It would be really amazing if it happened and you would be really lucky. It just happened to you to help an old man cross the road and take the position which someone should get from working at the company for more than ten years.

There are some examples to support my perspective. One is that Terry Gou, the richest family of a district in Taiwan, worked hard for everything. He has got and acquired the high social status now. He was not rich when he was a child. Luck is not the decisive factor for him to get such a high social status. It should attribute to his good preparation and hard work.

The other example is my brother. When he was a child, he seldom got good grades and hated to study. Thus, many of his subjects were failed. One day, he realized that he would not graduate with his classmates at the same time if any of his subjects did not pass. Therefore, he started to study hard and tried to pass the whole subjects as possible as he could. Finally, all his subjects passed, and he not only graduated with his classmates but also entered his ideal college. This is based on his working hard.

I believe that without good preparation no one would accomplish anything when the opportunity comes. It is like what Oprah said, “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” Terry Gou

and my brother succeeded because they worked hard for what they wanted. Prepare yourself well and never give up if you want to become successful. Luck is when preparation meets the opportunity.
