Should English Be Withdrawn from College Entrance Examination?

For students, there is a piece of big news in China recently. Officials from the Ministry of Education announced that English test will be removed from college entrance examination since 2017. In my opinion, it is not a good proposition. There are three reasons for my argument.  It is not only harmful for students in the future, but also unfair for students who are good at liberal arts. Furthermore, English is important in this global world.

First of all, English being withdrawn from college entrance examination leads to discontinuation in learning English. As a result, students will move most of their time into studying other courses. That is to say, students will just spend time in learning Math and Chinese or the other courses that will be tested in the college entrance examination. They will stop learning English. However, it takes time to develop desirable English ability. So, it is difficult for students to continue learning English in the future.

Second, English’s exit is unfair for students who are good at liberal arts. English is a part of liberal arts. No English test in the entrance examination means that students who are good at it can’t get higher grades. And these students are less likely to get into a satisfactory school. So, I don’t agree with removing the English test from the college entrance examination.

Last but not least, English is important in this global world. With the development of globalization, more and more people come to China, and more and more Chinese go abroad. English is an important skill when we need to communicate with people from other countries. So, it is unreasonable to remove English from the entrance examination.

On the other hand, if English is still in the entrance examination, students will study English all through their high school years. That will form the backbones of the future English use. And all the problems following English’s exit will clear away.

To be honest, I think English being withdrawn from the college entrance examination will make students feel relaxed. But it is not a good decision for the long term. The future generation may lose competitiveness in the global world because of the policy.
