Types of Parents

                                                                                                       Cindy Yan

When walking on the street, we can find that parents educate their children in different ways. According to the requirements of parents and their ability to respond to their children, parents can be roughly divided into authoritarian, uninvolved, and democratic parents.

The first type is authoritarian parents. This type of parents has high expectations and strict regulations and punishment systems for their children. When children didn’t follow their guidelines, they will punish them without hesitation. Children’s feelings are not taken into consideration when home rules are being made. Such parents always say, "You must listen to me because I am your parent." or "You must do what I said because I am your parent." Therefore, children who grow up under this type of parenting style are often unhappy and anxious. In addition, they lack self-confidence, rely on others, and even lack social skills. My mother is more like anauthoritarian parent. She has high expectations on us and is strict with us.

The second type is uninvolved parents. The characteristic of such parents is that they rarely interact with their children, don’t care about their children's lives and have little expectation and low standard for their children's behavior. Furthermore, the parent-child relationship tends to be estranged. Uninvolved parents may say to their child, “I don't bother to care where you are going." or "Why do I need to know what you are doing?" Therefore, children who grow up in such families may show unrulybehavior and self-centered mindset. Also, they tend to lack self-control and purposes for life.

The last type is democratic parents. The interaction and communication between democratic parents and their children are open, which means not only parents have the opportunity to speak but children can also express their opinions. Parents will discipline their children with good reason when they make a mistake. In addition, democratic parents will accept the inherent characteristics of their children rather than control or blame them. This type of parents allows their children to make their own choices and teach them to be responsible for themselves. So, children who grow up under such parenting style can be more independent, like to challenge new things, and develop good adaptability to a new environment. My father belongs to this type of parents. He supports everything I want to do as long as it is not a bad thing. He has also taught me to be responsible for my future since I was a child.

The environment that we face at the beginning of our live is “family,” which is the initial place where children's personality traits are formed. During this period, the most influential role to children is their parents; therefore, the parents' every move affects the formation of children's personality. Finally, I believe parents love their child no matter what kind of parenting style they have.
