A Prevailing Life

Jennifer Hsiao

Depression can destroy one’s will, can change one’s life, can end one’s life, but it can also strengthen one’s heart. Jane is as common as other girls. However, she grows up to be a mature and charming woman from many adversities. Jane lives in her uncle’s house before she goes to school. Because her aunt does not like her, she is treated like a salve in this home. She cannot protect herself when her cousin bullies her. After she goes to school, her aunt tells a lie to her teacher. Fortunately, Jane proves that she is not a liar. Then, she has her first job in Thornfield, Her personality appeals to Mr. Rochester, the owner of Thornfield and they fall in love with each other. But Jane finds out about Mr. Rochester’s ex-wife in their wedding, so she leaves Mr. Rochester in great despair. In the end, however, Jane comes back to Thornfield to accompany Mr. Rochester. In the story, Jane becomes much stronger after she overcomes many obstacles and frustrations because of her intelligent, stubborn and caring personality.

Jane can judge her current situation correctly and quickly with her intelligence. As she is put in the red room where her uncle died and when she fights with her cruel cousin, she realizes the only way to leave there is studying. Thus, she argues with her aunt to have the opportunity to have a new life. She goes to school to absorb knowledge hard and her rich knowledge wins her respect from others.

Facing different kinds of troubles and setbacks, Jane does not change her will and remains persistent. When Jane’s aunt continuously accuses her of lying, she does not become a liar. Then, her teacher thinks she is a careless girl but she does not give up on herself. In the end, she chooses to come back to accompany Mr. Rochester, although he told a lie to her before. Stubborn Jane Eyre has never changed her will no matter what she encounters.

Jane is so caring that this personality trait brings her good relationships. She makes others feel warm. As a result, when she leaves Thornfield, her cousin is willing to marry her to take care of her. It’s true that doing good things can bring good luck. Jane likes to take care of people surrounding her. So as she faces difficulties, people would also like to help her.

To sum up, Jane’s striking characteristics help her through the challenges and frustrations again and again. As a result, Jane gains knowledge and wisdom and arises from life of depression, and becomes stronger and wiser. All the complexities in life may be puzzling to Jane, but they never demoralize her. She grows to be an intelligent, warm and confident woman in the end.
