Going to a Graduate School vs. Finding a Job

Zoe Lee

I will become a senior student next semester. The senior year is a crucial period in my life, and I need to decide to go to a graduate school or find a job. For me, the answer is absolutely to go a graduate school, due to my preference for colorful campus life, my goal for self-improvement and my determination to prevail in the fierce social competition.

To begin with, going to a graduate school makes me possess the opportunity to enjoy a colorful campus life. During school time, I own more freedom to do and finish the things I like. Reading is one of my favorite things. If I go to a graduate school, I will be able to keep reading the books I love. Moreover, the campus activities are diverse and meaningful. I can offer my help to those who are in need or in trouble when I participate in volunteer activities. And as a main character of a drama play, I will be more aware of teamwork spirit and enjoy the fun in the course of performance. However, if I choose to find a job, I will be restricted by the heavy workload. There will be less time for me to do what I want. The pressure from the boss and the society will be like a big stone on my head. Thus, I will feel anxious and stressed.

Secondly, self-improvement is one of the great reasons when I consider whether I should go to a graduate school or not. In my view, the four years of studying in my university is not sufficient. I want to go to a graduate school, in order to gain more knowledge about science, art or philosophy to improve my cultural quality. The standard of teachers in the graduate school is higher than that in the university. It enables me to become stricter with myself, and then I will be more hard-working and professional. By contrast, doing a job may make me become confused as I am still not sure what I really want to do for my career. In addition, I will lose my intention to improve myself since I have to totally immerse myself in the work every day. After finishing my work, I am likely to feel exhausted and don’t want to do anything else.

Last but not least, the social competition is extremely fierce nowadays. Generally, those who go to the graduate schools tend to have a better and brighter future. The global and renowned enterprises are more likely to employ the individuals who graduate from a graduate school as they tend to be more knowledgeable, skillful and thoughtful. If I go to find a job now, I may not find a desirable job. There is also not so much room for me to advance my career. In recent years, more and more people have learning experience abroad or study in a prestigious school. As a student of a general university, I believe I should go to a graduate school for a better profession in the future.

To sum up, going to a graduate school is a better choice because of my preference for colorful campus life, my desire for advancement, and my chance to fare well in the fierce social competition. There is no doubt that the graduate school is a wonderful place for me to study in. I hope I can have an enriching experience in the graduate school if I get admitted to an ideal one.
