The Negative Effects of the Internet on Young People

Elaine Chen

It is very convenient that we surf the Internet to find much information. And young people especially like to play games on the Internet. It is the common situation. However, the Internet would cause negative effects on them.

Surfing the Internet can disrupt their daily routines. Young people like to do things through the Internet. For example, instead of doing homework, they will surf the Net after school, and they may not have dinner, take bath and study. They often stay up playing on the Internet, so they wake up late. They surf the Net most of the time, and do nothing about the things they have to do. As time goes by, they will become addicted to the Net, and they will lose the ability to arrange time. It seems that surfing the Internet becomes the central part of their life. Thus, they are likely to develop bad living habits.

The Internet can also affect their health. For example, they often look at computer screens for a long time. They will feel uncomfortable with their eyes, and their vision will become worse. Besides, if they surf the Net over extended hours, their body functions will become worse because they don't exercise. Their metabolism will be abnormal, so their stomachs will be unhealthy. They may not defecate every day. As a result, their liver functions may also be affected. It will lead to many health problems. For example, they may often feel tired, so they are not able to concentrate on everything. Also, they may get sick easily. In a word, surfing the Net too many hours can affect their body functions. They should be careful about it.

As young people like to surf the Net most of the time, they don't have many chances to have real communication with people. They communicate with unreal people. We know that it is easy to be cheated in the virtual world. People who are in the virtual world often hide their real identity to do something illegal. If young people are addicted to the Net, they may not only be cheated but also lose the ability to communicate with people in the real environment. If they lose such ability, they will not have friends. Maybe they have cyber friends, but it is dangerous because they don't know the real identities of them. Communicating with people in the virtual world is not realistic, and it is full of danger. Young people need to learn how to socialize in the real environment.

Surfing the Internet can be helpful to young people, but it can also cause many negative effects on them. Mostly, it has harmful effect on their routines, health and communication. Young people should manage their time well, notice their health condition, and keep communicating with people. Young people should learn how to control themselves, for if they are addicted to the Internet, it can cause many troubles to their life.
