My Experience about Being a Volunteer for Deaflympics

Carrie Shen

The most meaningful thing I did in this summer vacation was being a volunteer for Deaflympics. I was distributed to Cosmos Hotel to help the players who came from Republic of Colombia and Belgium. During the work, accompanying one of the deaf players from Belgium to buy the tickets of High Speed Rail is the most special experience to me. Because he only could use sign language and body language to communicate, I had difficulty understanding their meanings at the beginning. However, this player was very friendly and patient. If I didn’t realize the meaning he wanted to express, he explained more clearly again and again. We talked with gesture language about Taipei and culture of his country. I was so glad that we only used writing to communicate once when we bought the tickets of High Speed Rail. Eventually, he used the gesture language to appreciate me and told his friends I was his best friend in Taiwan. Afterwards, we became friends and promised that we would keep in touch on the website by e-mails. I couldn’t believe that I could be an excellent volunteer that the players would remember. Though I got lots of difficulties communicating with deaf players, I improved my ability to deal with problems and broaden my horizon. Finally, Deaflympics finished perfectly. I witnessed this historical and meaningful international deaf athletic meet. I gained not only the impressive memory but also a foreign friendship. Consequently, I would keep these touching moments I had got in mind and train myself to face more challenges in the future.
