A University Needs a Specific Calendar

Aileen Hu

The school calendar is the time schedule which is announced in advance from the very beginning of a new semester to the ending of it. In other words, students could have a clear idea about what will happen and when all the events will happen even prior to the start of a new semester. Actually, it's very common for universities to announce their school calendars about the next semester before the end of the current semester. For example, Chinese Culture University (my exchange school in Taiwan) has a specific calendar, from which I really benefit a lot when I am studying in there. Yet, Beijing Sport University (my school) fails to give students an advanced schedule. What's worse, even after the announcement of it, the school can't strictly follow it. Hence, as far as I am concerned, a university without a clear and explicit calendar not only brings negative influence to the school reputation, but also does harm to their students’ holiday planning and future development since they can't plan an accurate personal schedule in advance accordingly.

Someone will argue that there is always something unexpected, so, it’s inevitable that the calendar will be disrupted. In that case, announcing school calendars seems meaningless, if it can't be put into practice. However, to some extent, a specific school calendar can reflect the integrated power of a good university such as its planning, administrating, and coordinating ability because the school can successfully handle the changes and make response to them quickly. Therefore, as a disciplined high-level university, it ought to carry out this task very well.

Frankly speaking, without a clear school schedule, students would be influenced a lot on their holiday planning, since many of them need to book train tickets 30 days in advance. What's worse, the ending of the fall quarter coincides with the spring rush. In case students can’t get any reliable information from the school calendar, they might not be able to purchase any ticket for the unknown future. In addition, when they want to fly back to their hometown, they can't book tickets unless the school schedule is certain. Under this circumstance, they might lose the chance to get the tickets. What’s worse, an uncertain calendar brings inconvenience to not only the students, but also their parents who miss their kids badly.

In addition, without a specific school calendar does harm to students’ future developments. They can't get access to fabulous winter camps when they don't know much about the school’s planned activities; they can't participate in international exchange programs; they can't find satisfying internships to accumulate experiences. Without a specific and reliable school calendar, students may be forced to give up many good opportunities.

In a nutshell, every university indeed needs a specific school calendar, not only for their good fame, but also to meet individual students’ need and the parents’ expectations.
