Luck or Opportunity?

Ada Li

Have you ever heard about Oprah Winfrey’s story? She is an excellent host of a talk show. But she had an unfortunate childhood. Can you imagine how she became a person now whom everyone wants to be from a person whom everyone sympathized with before? Do you think she is a lucky person? I think she is. She is so lucky to have so many opportunities to change her life. But I do not mean the luck is the top of the life.

How do you define a person lucky or unlucky? I think the person who gets many benefits without much paying is lucky. For example, I won the lottery, I bought the last hit goods or I wasn't in a traffic jam in the weekend afternoon.... Besides, the chance to show my ability and advantage is a kind of luck, too. But in the case of Oprah, we can't think she is just lucky, and we all know she must have worked hard. That is why I say luck is not the top. It is more important to catch the chance to change your fate.

How about the opportunity? The opportunity is usually a turning point. We may do a good job to make our life better or get failure which makes us down. But, the opportunity would find us by itself sometimes. In most situations, we should create the opportunity for ourselves! It is said that there is no free lunch. Therefore, we should take the active role in our life and grasp every opportunity that comes to our way.

I find out the people whom I admire have one similarity. It is they all work hard in every opportunity they have had. Michael Jordan and Oprah Winfrey both were looked down by other people at first, but they did not give up. They have much patience and trust themselves. Therefore, I would catch every opportunity given to me. To wait the luck coming is too passive. We need to be more active to grasp every opportunity!
