Is Homosexuality a Disease?

Blythe

Homosexuality is a universally controversial issue. For example, when the government of Switzerland announced that homosexuality was a disease, many Swiss were angry for the rule, and they struck back. They asked for sick leaves by claiming that they got a “gay disease.” Some people think homosexuality is a disease based on the rule of survival, traditional concepts, and the exclusiveness; however, I hold the opposite opinion.

Many people think homosexual people break the rule of survival for human beings. It’s generally held that human beings have the responsibility for successful procreation for evolution’s sake. However, homosexual people can’t breed physiologically. In fact, I think people should be given choice as to have children or not. Nowadays, couples who have no children are accepted by most people. Actually, according to studies, homosexual tendency is congenital, and homosexual people’ genetic structure is somewhat different from that of normal people. In addition, there are many homosexual people in history. They are famous historical figures, and they have made great contributions to human societies.

Some people with traditional concepts may consider homosexuality abnormal. The stereotype of sex is that a man loves a woman or a woman loves a man, which is indoctrinated and becomes rooted from birth. Thus homosexuality is often despised and prohibited. But many homosexual people are innate in their sexual orientation, and some of them are liberal-minded and frank with their own sexual inclination. As a result, they shouldn’t be discriminated against. It’s just that they don’t conform to the social norm in terms of their sexual tendency and behavior.

Generally, people think heterosexual people are more normal. As an analogy, people keep right when they take the escalator, so if someone keeps left, they will sniff at him or her. Similarly, many people despise homosexual people and can’t tolerate their inclination and behavior just because they are different. I think homosexual people can’t be regarded as sick men because they can live their life the same as normal people. People should respect them as who they are.

In conclusion, homosexuality is not a disease in that it is a natural characteristic, people possess the human right to choose their own lifestyle, and they can do everything that common people do. If homosexuality is a disease, it means it is abnormal, but it is mostly a natural tendency. It is a feature of some people and a phenomenon in the society, not a disease.
