Three Main Types of Dogs

People always say “A dog is the best friend of humans.” Thus, people like to choose a dog as their pet. Because of their personality, dogs attract more affection from ordinary people than other animals such as cats, birds, and mice. The owners can have interaction with their dogs. People have different reasons and purposes for raising dogs. According to their functions, I classify dogs into three main groups: guard dogs, working dogs, and toy dogs.

In Taiwan, guard dogs are usually seen in the factory. The common traits of guard dogs are being protective, alert, and willing to fend off unwanted people or animals. They are trained to be fearless and fierce in order to frighten away strangers and ensure the safety of the factory. This kind of dog is discriminating so that it does not annoy or attack familiar people. These dogs may not vary in size; the owners would like their guard dogs in large or medium size. The most general breeds of guard dogs are Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepherd Dog and The Formosan Dog.

Working Dogs are bred for assisting people with certain types of work. They are raised to perform tasks such as pulling sleds, performing water rescues and helping blind people. These intelligent dogs are very quick to learn and very friendly toward everyone. Most importantly, this type of dog has a highly stable temperament. Popular working dog breeds include the Boxer and the Saint Bernard, and the common breeds of guide dogs are Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever.

Toy dogs have many different breeds, but they share the same characteristic of being small. Toy dogs are popular with city dwellers who do not have a lot of extra space in their homes. Despite their tendency of yapping, toy dogs are considered the best dogs for novice owners, though their fragility can make them less than ideal pets for families with small children. Toy dogs are good at learning tricks, and excel in obedience. Chihuahua, Maltese, Pomeranian, and Yorkshire Terrier are the popular breeds of toy dogs.

I classify dogs into three groups based on the purposes for humans to raise them. No matter which kind they are, dogs are the best companion of humans. Although raising a dog takes a lot of time and money, it is worth it since the dogs are loyal and can meet the owner’s expectation.
