Should Students Get up Early for Class?

Students should comply with the timetable of school. It is common for Taiwanese students to go to school at 7 or 7:30 a.m. In Taiwan, courses are usually dismissed at 4 or 5 p.m. and after school many students have to go to cram school. Thus, students’ all day is full of curriculums, and they must be exhausted when they’re home. Furthermore, they still have some homework to do after cram school, so the pressure may influence the quality of their sleep. I consider that school should begin classes one or two hours later every morning, especially elementary schools.

First, if students don’t have enough energy, they may fall asleep in class, and their scores will fall behind others’. Moreover, their concentration may be affected under these circumstances. It is easier for them to make mistakes when doing homework or taking tests.

Second, students may have some health problems if they often stay up late to write their homework, and get up too early in the morning. For example, they are more likely to catch a cold when they are under pressure and have insufficient rest. It will decrease the efficiency of their learning.

Third, later starting time for early classes can decrease the possibility of students’ being late for class, which increases their willingness to go to school. I think Taiwan can follow the schools in foreign countries. Students go to school at 8 or 9 a.m., and class is dismissed at 3 p.m. More importantly, students don’t need to go to cram school.

To sum up, enough sleep and motivation can result in good learning attitude and efficiency of students, and they can have more leisure time to join some extracurricular activities to learn various kinds of things that can’t be learned from schoolwork.
