The Challenges of Going Back to the Basketball Team

Jackie

When I first decided to go back to the basketball team, I wasn’t sure about my ability to do the work. When I was a freshman, I joined my department’s basketball team. I was a good player. But at the same time I joined another club to help my country. I joined “Cha-Yi Friends’ Club.” It was a club which helps Cha-Yi elementary schools in the remote area to have a summer or winter camp. Because it was too hard to have two extracurricular activities at the same time, I quitted the basketball team. A year later, there were not many things to do at “Cha-Yi Friends’ Club.” I could have time to join the basketball team again. Little did I know that returning to the basketball team after a long time would bring me so many challenges.

First of all, after a year of not practicing with the teammates I just knew the old teammates in my class, so I had to get to know new players on the team. Because we didn’t know each other, we should practice more to have better tacit understanding. It would take me a lot of time and I had to try harder to let them trust my skill at playing ball even after such a long time of not playing.

Second, I didn’t keep my stamina when I joined “Cha-Yi Friends’ Club,” so the regular practice would be a little bit too hard for me. A full-court basketball game needs more stamina than 3 on 3 basketball game. I just played 3 on 3 basketball games in the last year. So I needed to spend more time in jogging to increase the strength of my body.

Finally, during the year when I was not on the team, many new tactics were used. I also forgot a lot of old team tactics. So I had to practice again and again with my teammates. It was difficult because I was not accustomed to the team. In addition, the style of playing was changed after many seniors graduated. We had played a lot of pick and roll because many seniors were taller than all of us, so they could screen for us and we could easily find a space to shoot. The current team was smaller. We needed to keep running for space to shoot and used speed or stamina to make the opponents confused.

Going back to the basketball after a year of not playing basketball was a hard thing to do. But I love basketball and I trust my teammates. We will have a lot of basketball games in the second semester, especially the game in Taichung called “The English Cup.” Although there is not enough time to practice, I will do my best and help my team win the game.
