School Rules: Eating in the Classroom

Sarah Hsu

I think that students should not eat in the classroom during the class. When we attended the school the first time, the first rule given must be "No eating in the classroom." Why do many schools have this rule? I think there are several reasons, and next I will list three reasons for this school rule.

Firstly, I think if students eat in the classroom, they cannot concentrate on the lesson, and it would also disturb other students’ learning. And I remember when I was in high school, I ate breakfast during the class. I was very nervous then. I really tried to stand starving until the bell rang, but I gave up and ate breakfast as quickly as possible. However, the tragedy occurred because I spilled the milk tea on my textbook carelessly, and unfortunately I found every classmate staring at me. I felt very embarrassed, and the teacher told me that I disturbed her teaching. Owing to this experience, I would never eat food during the class.

Second, some teachers feel disrespected if students eat in the classroom. When the teacher teaches, he hopes every student could listen carefully, and concentrate on his teaching. So if students eat in the classroom, the teacher would think that they should concentrate on the learning instead of eating food. For me, I had some complaints about those people who eat the strong smell food such as fried chicken and instant noodles. The smell of these two kinds of food would fill the classroom, and made people feel hungry.

Third, according to some research, people who did not eat too much food would have better effect on studying than those ate too much food. After I ate some food, I would feel sleepy. And I thought if I could keep sober during the class, I would have better achievement on learning than before. So, I advise people wanting to study hard should avoid eating food at the same time.

Finally, I think students should not eat in the classroom, although it is very difficult for me. I would try to restrain my appetite during the class, because I know it could help me concentrate on the class, and not influence other people. After all being a student, the most important thing is studying effectively.
