The Most Horrible Experience That I Have Ever Had

Tiffany Chen

Three years ago, I experienced the most horrible thing that I have ever had— being trapped in the elevator in our new house.Honestly, I couldn’t believe such a terrible thing would have happened to me, for the probability of its occurrence is too low, and this kind of thing seems to appear only in the movie scene. Till now, I still remember the whole event clearly although it happened many years ago.

That day was a special day because it was my mother’s birthday. In the afternoon, I went to the bakery to choose a birthday cake for her. After I bought a cake, I called my mom and told her that I would go home soon. Hanging up the phone, I arrived at entrance door to our new house and then walked in. It is a fourteen- story building, and we lived on the fourteenth floor. I pressed the elevator button, and then waited the elevator as usual. In that moment, I was very excited and anticipated to see my mother’s happy face. Little did I know that something terrible would happen right next moment.

When the elevator was on the tenth floor, the light of the elevator was off suddenly, and the surrounding became completely dark. I was very afraid and didn’t know what to do because I couldn’t see anything. Just then, the light was on again, and I thought it was just a temporary mechanical problem and I didn’t need to worry too much. I was wrong, and the worst thing was that the elevator descended abruptly very fast, and I could only instinctively grabbed the rail in the elevator.“Oh my goodness, maybe I will die very soon!” I screamed loudly. I was so frightened that the sweat broke out on my backbone. Luckily, the elevator stopped on the third floor instead of falling down to the basement. At this moment, I tried to calm down first, for I had to focus my thought in order to find a way to escape. After thinking for a while, I pressed the emergency button to contact the security guard. “Help me, and what’s wrong with this elevator? I am stuck in it on the third floor. Please send someone to handle it as soon as possible. I don’t want to die!” I pleaded anxiously.“Okay, I can see you in the monitor. Please calm down and wait for us to get you out. There are some technical problems with the elevator, and it may take about one hour to solve the problem. We apologize for this inconvenience.” Instantly, I also asked him to contact my mom, for she had been waiting for me to go home. Because there was no cell phone’s signal in the elevator, I could do nothing but seated myself on the ground, waiting fearfully for the rescue in the dark all by myself.

After forty minutes, I heard some voice outside, and it seemed the voice of my mom. She tried to talk with me to ease my anxiety. Meanwhile, I also heard the sound of machinery which slammed to the elevator door. Before long, the elevator door finally opened. I saw many people outside with my mom, and she looked very worried.I knew my face looked pale even though I was saved, and I felt very fatigued. Hardly could I stand up and walked out the elevator, for I was scared to death. I hadn’t experienced that kind of feeling before, so I needed some time to recover. My mother felt relieved after seeing that I was safe and sound, but she became a little angry with the security guard.“Thank god my daughter is safe. If this emergency had happened to the elder people instead of my daughter, the consequence would have become even worse, and you should enhance the maintenance of the elevator.” My mom told him unhappily, because she was really worried about me. The security guard apologized for his carelessness and emphasized he would pay more attention to maintaining the elevator.Luckily, I didn’t get any hurt and was still alive. In fact, I had thought I would probably die in the elevator if I was stuck in it for a long time, since there were no food, water, and air for me to survive.

After experiencing this most horrible thing in my life, I learned a lot from it. I hoped this kind experience was the first time and also the last time. We can’t predict what thing will happen in the future, so what we can do is to it when we meet it. This experience taught me how to face the emergency event, and I would never forget it.
