Should Guns Be Banned in the US?

Willy Chang

From ancient to modern times, we have an unchanged law, “survival for the fittest.” And I think the ones who have weapons are the winners. The States has cutting-edge weapons in the world. Unfortunately, many innocent people died in gun violence in the country. Even president Obama proposed to ban assault weapons, limit the high capacity weapons, and check universal background of gun owners and sales. However, he was soon denied. In my opinion, it is impossible to ban firearm in the US because of its culture, interest groups, and Constitution.

First of all, America has a gun culture; the birth of the States dating back to the 17th century was founded upon guns. Settlers guarded themselves from Native Americans, animals, and foreign armies. Also, hunting is a popular sport activity from past to present.

Second, the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” No matter how a state law regulates guns, the US citizens are entitled to own guns. The process of changing the Constitution is very complex. As far as I am concerned, it is almost impossible to change.

Third, special interest groups influence the congress of the US. The States is the biggest gun market in the world. It has plenty of international weapon corporations from various countries such as Germany, England, Swiss, and so forth. The arms industry has made tremendous profits, so if the government banned weapons, many interest groups would die. Hence, the interest groups bribe the congressmen in order to object the policy of gun ban. The National Rifle Association (NRA), the largest and oldest gun organization, also stands for gun right and their opinions always impact on the government.

To conclude, although gun violence is a huge problem in the States, guns are impossible to ban due to the gun culture, the Constitution, and special interest groups of the US. In order to keep and bear arms, American people have paid a high price. The victims of gun violence please accept my condolence. And I severely curse all the gun abusers. God bless Americans.
