The Delicacies in My Hometown

Jeff Guan

My hometown, Chia-yi, located in the south of Taiwan, is a very simple and natural city. It doesn’t have so many buildings as Taipei. Chia-yi is a lovely city. When I study in Taipei, the delicacies of my hometown always call to my mind. Generally, the food is very cheap. There are a lot of stands and vendors spreading on the streets of Chia-yi. The most famous food in Chia-yi is chicken rice. The rice with chicken and some chicken soup are very delicious, and there are other tiny desserts such as “Square crackers,” which are popular with Taiwanese. Chia-yi has not only the above two famous food but also other delicacies. For example, the fried chicken chops and rice in a restaurant near my high school campus. The fried chicken chop is very cheap and juicy. This restaurant is always crowded with students. Not only is the food there delicious, the service is good, too. The waitresses and restaurant owner always greet students by saying, “Welcome, handsome men and beautiful women.”And students are satisfied with their service. The other near-campus delicacies are steak and pork with their noodles, which are very delicious. The steak is very tasty, especially the thick steak with some delicious noodles, a few vegetables and an egg. But the most important is when compared with Taipei's steak, it is only half of the price. Finally, I think there is one delicacy I can’t forget “the egg roll,” which is popular around Taiwan. On every Chinese New year, I always see the long line in front of the dessert store. The egg roll is a popular dessert among both children and elders. When I go home I always buy some to treat my friends. A proverb says, “There is no food like hometown’s delicacies.” I can not agree more. I like the delicacies of my hometown.
