Observation of an Old Man

Wendy Chiu

My friend was working on her report of an observation of an old man. She asked me to go with her, for she was afraid that she would look strange and feel bored standing there for hours. Accompanying her, I could give her my perspective of the old man, so her report might be more objective. Therefore, we spent six days secretly following the elder and carried outthe observation project.

The old man is a plumber who owns a little store. Heis about seventy, tall and slim.He always dresses in white and black. I could tell from his behavior that he is a nice person. Not only does he always wear a smile on his face, but also greet and talk with his neighbors friendly. We even once overheard him singing a Taiwanese song. It was so interesting that we could not help but laugh out loud.

As he had to go to different places to visit his customers, he needed a transportation tool. To our surprise, his transportation meanswas a bicycle. He rode his bike to customers’ places and always carried a heavy tool box with him. Sometimes, he went out for hours, but still came back with a happy smile on his face. When he was staying in his store, he did not just fool around. He cleaned up his desk, tool boxes, shelves and his bike. For every moment we watched him, he seemed happy.

On the last day, my friend planned to have a talk with the old man, so she could know more about him. We were really nervous to begin the conversation until the old man made a funny joke on my friend. We had a pleasant talkabout his work and family. Through the conversation, we found out that he might be actually quite satisfied with his life.

In every society, there must be some people who work hard to make their living and are not happy with their life. However, there are still others who hold a little business but work with enthusiasmthat makes them feel content. Through this observation, we found out that we should not pay too much attention on how we can become the best; instead, we ought to figure out how we can lead our life the way we want.
