Essential Qualities of a Good Leader

Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, is now responsible for Starbucks. Howard Schultz has not only excellent ability at work but also good leadership. A leader is the heart of a group, and a good leader must possess the essential qualities which are being fair in everything, inspiring the group members and protecting the group.

A leader needs to deal with many situations in the group, and thus how to be a fair one is a tough matter. I am a member of Association of Campus Ambassador of Chinese Culture University. The leader of our group is Shing Yang, who always tackles problems straight away with a fair attitude. It is hard to deal with things or make a decision which is fair to everyone. And I think treating the group members impartially is essential to maintain harmony in a group.

Being able to inspire the group members is another important quality for a good leader. Maintaining a group relationship is the main issue in a group. I became a cadre of the group this year. Every time when I encountered difficulties, Shing Yang always accompanied me and cheered my up. Leaders should also be grateful to their group members, even small gestures of gratitude show people that they matter. Or a quick “Thank you, this mission couldn’t have been done without you” is enough to inspire the group.

To protect the group is also an important concern of a leader. Association of Campus Ambassador stands for our school and people watch them with high standard. All the group members are closely watched by all in the school. Regardless how carefully we behave, one misstep, small or otherwise, will lead tocriticism. Shing Yang chooses the strict way to treat us because it can prevent us from being condemned.

A leader of a group is very important. In my opinion, staying fair, inspiring the group members and protecting the group are the three primary responsibilities of a good leader. We should cultivate in us these three because we do not know when we may become a leader someday, either in school or at work.
