Reasons Why I Oppose Gay Marriage

Joy Lee

Long time ago, people defined the union of two people of different sexes as a marriage. However, the definition has changed in recent years. There are more and more people who merry with a person of the same sex. I oppose gay marriage because it will cause problems in various aspects, such as social tolerance, raising children, and so on. Here are some reasons why I oppose gay marriage.

First, gay marriage is allowed in some countries, such as Netherlands, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, and so on, but most people still oppose gay marriage. Take America for example. There are five U.S states allowing gay marriage but nearly seventy percent of Americans oppose gay marriage. Take Asia for another example; though it is legal for people to have homosexual acts in most countries, the same-sex marriage is still illegal. I think it is still a strange behavior in Taiwan, though Taiwan is one of the countries in which homosexual acts are legal.

Second, most people cannot stand same-sex marriage because everyone knows marriage is a tie between one man and one woman. Because this idea is in everyone’s mind for a long time, it is easy for people to think that homosexual marriage is immoral. Another reason that people oppose homosexual marriage is religion. Not every society and religion can tolerate this kind of marriage. Many religions don’t support same-sax marriage, including Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. I think religion is a force that holds back the gay marriage rate.

Finally, gay marriage can cause an important problem—children. Same-sex couples often have their children through adoption because they have no ability to have their own children. When children grow up, they come to realize the difference between their parents and other parents are. It can also influence the development of children’s mind. Jonathan Rauch said, “Children would be directly affected by same-sex marriage.” Because of the home environment of the children, they are likely to develop confusing sexual identification.

The above are the reasons why I oppose gay marriage. Though gay marriage is legal in some countries, I still cannot accept it. When I see the same-sex couples on the street, I feel uncomfortable. I think it influences not only the couple itself but also the next generation.
