Working or Studying?

Max Xie

It is my last year in the university. Although I major in Literature, what I want to do is about music after graduation. Music is my interest, and I think it would be perfect if I could combine my work and interest. I have been thinking about whether to go to work or to study in music after graduation. In the following, I am going to compare these two options, and decide which one is better for me.

In my opinion, having great basics of melody and rhyme is very important for a professional composer and musician. I have started to make my own music since I was in senior high school. I was not good at any instruments, and I learned every technique and skill from the Internet. If I go to study music in the graduate school, I can learn the basic skill well and acquire more professional knowledge in music. But there is a huge problem for me to enter the music department -- I can’t play any instruments. It’s the same reason that I didn’t study in the music department in the university. I have been working for four years in the university, and I don’t have much time to practice instruments. If I can’t play instruments in a professional way, I can’t pass the exam of the music department of the graduate school.

The other option is to go to work. After I graduated from the senior high school, I signed in an entertainment company. My company has helped me found different kinds of job, for instance, audio recording, being a supervisor of the concerts and album production. I have obtained a lot of techniques and experiences from these jobs, and also made money. But to be honest, the things I really want to do is composing. I can keep learning from various working experiences, but it would be hard for me to change the path in this field.

Both of the options have pros and cons, and I think going to work would be better for me. I believe as long as I keep working, I can save money and increase my experiences at the same time. It won’t be too late if I want to study in the graduate school several years later. To sum up the above reasons, I think going to work is better for me after graduation.
