Cut My Finger

Vivian Li

I cut a piece of my finger when I was cutting French bread for the customer in the bakery. I was frightened at that time. Now, I do everything carefully but quickly.

I had a part-time job in the bakery when I was a sophomore. We had to cut French bread if the customers asked for it. I always wanted to cut as fast as I could. One time, when I was cutting the French bread, I cut off a piece of my finger and nail. I was frightened because my finger was bleeding very badly. My co-worker took me to the hospital as soon as possible. But the doctor said the cut was too big to do the surgery to stop bleeding. The only thing I could do was to raise my hand higher than the heart. The doctor told me my finger couldn’t be washed or contact water. He also said that it required about one month to recover. I thus quit the part-time job, because I couldn’t do anything with only one hand.

During the recovering period, it was very inconvenient for me to do everything. I couldn’t wash my hair by myself. I couldn’t wash my left hand. But I think the lucky thing is I cut the finger of my left hand, not the finger of the right hand. If I had cut the finger of my right hand, I probably couldn’t write during that time.

Now, the second finger of my left hand is normal, but the part that I cut off can’t grow back. From this horrible accident, I learned something important. When we want to finish something, we have to do it slowly and carefully. Being fast wouldn’t help anything, and it may bring bad result.
