The Developing of Independence at the University

Alice Chen

Studying at the university is the transitional process in our life because it not only symbolizes that we have grown up but also means that it is time for us to be independent, especially for someone who studies far from home. Take myself as an example. I am the one who studies far from home and lives outsides, thus I have many chances to develop my independence at the university in my daily life and through working.

One thing in the university that develops my independence is that I can take the courses which I am interested in. I can not only take the required courses but also choose the elective courses according to my own interest. It is so different from high school where we always have the school timetable which has been arranged. Now, we can make a decision on our own class timetable. It is a landmark for us to be independent.

Living outsides is one of major factors that force me to be independent. It means that I have to do everything and solve any problems in my daily life by myself. For instance, I need to wash my clothes by myself even though I am really tired; I need to go to see a doctor by myself even though I am seriously sick; I need to contact the landlord by myself when the pipe or the light is broken, and so on. Sometimes, I feel exhausted about these things; however, it is a nice chance for me to grow up and be independent.

Working to pay for my daily expenses makes me financially independent thoroughly. I do not realize how hard it is to earn money until I have a part-time job. In my first part-time job, I worked at the restaurant; the things I did there sound easy but actually not. For example, I should always keep smile on my face toward every guest no matter how hard or how indignant things are; I have to clean the table as soon as guests leave and clean our environment when it is time for the closure. As a proverb goes, “No pains, no gains.” I learn something and earn money from working; however, I sacrifice my entertainment time.

People always grow up after experiencing something by themselves. Taking the courses, dealing with my daily activities, and doing the part-time job have helped me develop my independence thoroughly. I never think I can do these things without other people’s help until I enter the university and live outsides. My home is in Tainan; sometimes, I cannot believe I have been studying in Taipei for three years. It is said that environment can change a person. I think it is true, and I am proud of my independence.
