An Experience of Keeping a Pet

Ivy Lin

I had never cried so sorrowfully. I lost my favorite pet, Chi, several years ago. When I was an elementary school student, I liked to play with animals. They were so cute and kind that I couldn’t help getting close to them. I wanted to keep a pet in my home. But I never thought that the animal would die because of my innocence, so I never kept a pet anymore.

I remember that I had a pet, Chi, a chicken that was small and cute, when I was nine years old. I bought the chicken because I had a class about animals in school. I wanted to understand the process of their growing up. So I took my new pet home.

I made a box to be Chi’s house, and put a light on the top to prevent her from feeling cold. Every day I talked to Chi and played with her, though I did not know if she understood what I said or not. I had expected that Chi could accompany me for a long time.

One day when I went home, I discovered that Chi hadn’t any breath. I picked it up, and went to ask my mother, “What happened to Chi?” “Chi was dead.” My mother said. Suddenly, I could not say a word, and a sorrowful feeling struck me. I could not stop crying.

After this event, I have never had a pet. Children always think they can keep a pet and take good care of them. But it’s false. Some animals are not suitable to be domestic. I learned that I should respect life, and realized that I should not force anything to be my own.
