Planning to Enter a Graduate School

Jane Tsao

More and more undergraduate students do not want to continue studying for a master’s degree nowadays. Most of them consider that it is useless to go to a graduate school. Therefore, finding a job is the most important thing for them. However, I plan to go to a graduate school. The following are the three reasons why I plan to continue studying rather than finding a job.

First of all, I am not well prepared to work yet. When it comes to finding a job, I do not have any idea about what kinds of job I can do now. As law department students, getting lawyer’s licenses seems to be our required goal. It seems like if we do not have a lawyer’s license, there are not many legal jobs we can do except taking the public servant exam. However, entering a graduate school can be our protective umbrella because we can still prepare for the bar exam when we are in the graduate school. Besides, when our relatives ask us what we are doing now, we can answer, “We are still studying.” Therefore, they will not continue asking the annoying question, “Why don’t you have a lawyer’s license?”

Second, finding a job may interrupt what I want to learn. If I go to work, I will lose chances to enhance my knowledge. Nevertheless, if I go to a graduate school, I can obtain a great deal more professional knowledge. For example, when I was in the second year, I had a strong passion for International Law, but there are only four credits in the undergraduate curriculum. I did not have the chance to learn more about it. Thus, I want to specialize in International law when I am in the graduate school.

Finally, salary and position are the most important considerations for me. If I find a job right after I graduate from college, I may not earn a lot of money. According to some reports, college graduates may earn only NT$22,000 per month. It is very low. In contrast, if I have a master’s degree, I can earn much more money than those who only have a bachelor’s degree. Besides, after ten years, when we are going to have a promotion, I think people who have a master’s degree will have more opportunities than those who do not have one.

To sum up, I plan to go to a graduate school after graduating from university. It seems that going to a graduate school is the best choice for me. The reasons are that I am not currently well prepared for work, I want to specialize in International Law and I yearn for having a handsome income.
