Good Investments for My Future

Sherry Wei

Investment is a subject that most human beings would face. We have invested in lots of things since we were kids. On the other hand, what would people invest in themselves while they are at university? Learning a new language, getting a part-time job, and traveling around are my investments for my future while I am in university.

Studying hard is what students need to do. I am a university student, and I need to work hard on my schoolwork for sure. Although studying could be tiring for me, this is one kind of investment. If I study hard, I could learn a lot from school. I may use the knowledge that I have learned one day. I also went to a language cram school for learning a foreign language. If I learn another language well, I may use it in my life and job. In the future, if the company that I want to work for requires its employees to speak at least two different languages, then my second foreign language will become one of my advantages.

Having a part-time job has become essential for youngsters like me. Many companies require applicants to have “working experience.” These companies may want to know whether the applicants have relevant professional knowledge and practical skills for the prospective job. They would also want to know how long a person has worked, since a part-time job may demonstrate one’s working stability. Having some working experience is a valuable experience for me. If I have any problems in the future, I could look back and learn from my past experiences. In this way, I might be able to solve the problem faster because I had already faced it once.

Last but not least, traveling to other countries could help me broaden my horizon. Traveling is the greatest fun for me. People always say that they don't have time for traveling because of their work. The best part of being a university student is I could travel to where I want to go, and I could use the money that I earned from my part-time job. I can communicate with foreigners and get to know how they think about something. By traveling, I can practice the language that I have learned.

Studying, working, and traveling are my investments in myself in university. Although they may cost me some money, I gain a lot more from them. They could be tiring but enriching and relaxing. I think they are helpful.
