Not Every Foreigner Is Friendly

Joy Lee

I went to England for a month when I was a senior high student. I could go to England because our school planned an abroad group for students every year. Before I went to England, some people told me that foreigners were very kind to help people, so I began to believe that.  However, after I really went to England, I realized not every foreigner was kind to us or glad to help us.

I remember one day two of my friends were lost on their way home. They looked at the map and wanted to find the right way, but it was still useless. They finally decided to find a person to ask for the direction. When they found a person and showed the map to him, the person suddenly turned around and evaded them. Both of my friends were surprised and angry.

Another incident happened on the first day we went to the class; the teacher asked us to introduce ourselves to our partners. After we finished, the teacher began asking some students to tell him what we had talked to the other students. He called my name and I said the wrong thing about my partner. Some of the students began to laugh at me. After a few days, I found those students didn’t want to get along with me, so I was a little sad.

The other event occurred when our teacher took us to a shopping mall. When our teacher was waiting for settling accounts, an old woman who stood ahead our teacher found her wallet was gone. She thought our teacher stole her wallet and called the police immediately.  Our teacher insisted she didn’t steal her wallet but the old woman still didn’t believe her. The police came and made a body search of our teacher. They even watched the shopping mall’s monitors. After a long time, the police told the old woman our teacher didn’t steal her wallet.  Then, our teacher finally came back to us. During that time, my friends and I went to the shopping mall’s toilet and found that others were looking at us with discrimination.

These were unhappy memories for me. With these events, I realize that we have to take care of everything when we go out. Don’t think everyone is willing to help us when we are in trouble.
