Effects of Part-time Jobs

 Tiffany Tung

The first time I got a part-time job was in the summer before I became a freshman. Since then I have been working in summer for some pocket money. In this summer, I found a part-time job which could let me work after classes. Thus, I have been working after school since September. And I have found some effects after I started this kind of life.

The first effect, of course, is that I could pay my living expenses. It is great that I don’t have to ask my parents for money. I need to commute to school every day, which costs me 48 dollars every day. Also the meals every day cost even more. After I started to work, I learned to manage my savings. For example, I would limit my living expenses. Every expense has to be recorded, including eating and transportation costs. And, I would save half of my wages for my tuition.

The second effect is I can learn some English from the teachers while I am working. I am working in the cram school which offers English, Japanese and Korean courses. I can listen to the lessons outside the classroom. Sometimes I can hear something which is useful for me, which has improved my listening ability. And if there are some extra handouts, I can take them home. Some of them are really useful, like the test tips of TOEIC.

The third and the most important effect is I become more independent. I finally know the meaning of not relying on my parents. I am happy that I can share the financial responsibility with them. I want to prove that I can work and study at the same time, instead of being someone who only takes without giving anything.

However, I don’t have much time to be with my friends or family. I really hope my work would not affect my personal relationships. Through the part-time job, I have learned not only to communicate with people, but also to win myself some allowance and a sense of independence. I have gained a lot of accomplishment through this job. Even though it is hard, I am sure if I try harder, the work experience can help me succeed doing a full-time job in the future.
