Practice Makes Perfect

Evelyn Liao

I am not a very smart girl in my family. My parents used to be severe on my schoolwork. However, I usually failed and did not reach their standard. They were always upset about me. Therefore, I worked as possible as I could on everything I did.

When I was an elementary student, I tried hard on all my assignments, especially on the speech contest. Each of us should write the speech drafts by ourselves, and we should memorize them all. After that, we had to draw lots and went to other classes to perform. What I did was always a mess. I could not know the reasons why I could not do it well though I worked so hard and practiced so many times.

One day, I realized that I had been too nervous. Even if I got myself prepared, the outcome was always disappointing. I decided to find out the reason and got over my obstacle. I tried to talk to the classmates that I was not familiar with, and tried to make eye contact with people who I talked to. If I was still nervous, I would look at the place behind the person I talked with to pretend that I was confident. With these strategies and a lot of practice, I improved little by little.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Not everyone is born to be good at everything. Hard work pays off and practice makes perfect. I have overcome my weakness and become more proficient and confident in doing the thing I am engaged in. Yes, I firmly believe that nothing is impossible as long as we are determined to achieve it!
