Effects of Television Viewing on Young People

Jill Lin

In our life, most people like to watch TV. Watching TV is a part of their life, and people can get much information about everything they want to know by watching TV. Especially for young people, it can be considered a diversion and an important part of their life. Because of its convenience, they are influenced deeply by it. Whether the information we get is useful knowledge, latest trend or bad guidance, sometimes we don't know, and we can't choose what we will get from watching TV. Watching TV has good and bad influences on young people, and I give three instances of bad effects that include over-viewing of TV, bad behavior imitation and advertisements.

First, over-viewing of TV is bad to our eyes, and it could make us lose vision. Young people always watch TV for long hours. It is bad to our eyes, because we have to concentrate on watching it hard or for a long time, and then our eyes will be tired and uncomfortable. Gradually, we lose our vision day by day. This is the reason why more children have nearsightedness now than before. They may be addicted to watching TV series, cartoons or games, and so on, and they always forget to rest their eyes and relax, which may lead to their eyes’ degeneration.

Second, young people always imitate the behaviors of stars on TV. They always think that these behaviors are right and cool, so they can't and don't care if they are good or bad. Some people learn these behaviors from their idols just because they want to be like them and think that everything they do is right. Following the behaviors of stars causes some young people to commit crimes just because it is interesting, funny and cool, and they will be like their idols. It is a problem deserving our attention.

The last one is the effect of TV commercials on young people. Above seventy percent of beverages and snacks contain high fat, high salt, high calories and other unhealthy ingredients. The commercials attract people to eat the foods. When young people turn on the TV every day, they always watch these appealing commercials. Naturally, they will eat unhealthful snacks more, which include French fries, fried chicken, and coke, and so on. The foods increase their chances for having high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes, and so on. This is also a problem that parents are worried about now.

When we watch TV, remember the three points. Don't watch in the dark and for a long time. Judge if the behavior on TV is right or wrong, and don't be impulsive just for fun. Have a balanced diet, and don’t be influenced by commercials. Watching TV could be useful and interesting to you, but it could be a harmful activity to some. It depends on how you think, and what you want to learn from it.
