Dance Music Genres I Love

Nicholas Yang

I have been listening to electronic dance music for almost three years. It has become an indispensable part in my everyday life. From soft and slow ambient dance music to hard and fast hardcore dance music, all of them are loved by me. However, among these genres, there are three genres that I love the most: Deep House, Tech House, and Detroit Techno.

Deep House is one of the biggest subgenres of House music, which is a music genre that follows the repetitive 4/4 beats throughout the whole song. The main percussion elements usually include kicks on every 4 beats, hi-hat on every off beat, and claps on every 8 beats. Unlike other kinds of House music that consist of bright, loud, or weird synthetic sounds, Deep House focuses more on using normal instruments like the guitar, the piano, or the saxophone to create an uplifting and positive vibe to the listeners. In my music library, Fresh & Low’s New Life is probably be the best example of classic Deep House music. Its slow tempo, soulful female vocal, and the relaxing percussion will bring listeners to an uplifting and dreamy fantasy.

Tech House is the hybrid of House Music and Techno Music. It follows the same 4/4 beats rhythm structure as Deep House does. However, thanks to its sharp and machine-like percussions and some underground vocals, Tech House has a groovier, faster, and darker vibe than Depp House. Tech House is usually played in underground night clubs or bars in order to bring out the excitements and thrills to all the night club goers. For me, Oliver Huntemann’s Rotlicht is the perfect song to experience the dark atmosphere that Tech House brings to the listeners.

Detroit Techno is one of the biggest and oldest subgenres of Techno Music. It originated in Detroit, a city that is known for its heavy industry culture. Techno has a slightly faster tempo (around 125-130 BPM) and more metallic percussion elements like twisted hi-hat, claps, and shakers. Moreover, Detroit Techno is also known for its dark synth basslines, subby kick drums, industrial sound effects, and some underground vocals. Ben Klock’s Subzero is the most iconic Detroit Techno in my whole music library. Even though there is no vocal in the whole song, the subby kick drum, weird sound effects and some industrial metal clashes make this song the best Detroit Techno music in my collections.

Although I have various tastes when it comes to dance music, these three dance music genres are my all-time favorites. Some people may find these genres dull, boring, and predictable. However, in my opinion, simplicity is the more powerful than complexity.
