Motivation of the Study
Students in Taiwan always learn grammar patterns and sound forms, such as K.K. phonetic symbols from elementary school. However, this kind of instruction does not seem to work well for all students. One of researcher (沈凭羲) had taught after-school remedial instruction in Yangmingshan elementary school for one year. She found that first grade to sixth grade’s students commonly have difficulty to sound simple words. She noticed that teachers in this school generally teach K.K. phonetic symbols to students the phonetics. Nevertheless, students could not remember the specific symbols, furthermore, they gave up learning how to speak even sound the words. Therefore, researcher started to use phonics to facilitate their speaking ability. Through four-week instruction, students could speak some vocabularies even one sentence. As a result, we infer that phonics can be a useful and an alternative method to teach students how to speak out single vocabulary to a sentence. It might encourage and decrease their fearfulness to speak the English words by composing segments to a word. It might be essential to know the prevalent method, phonics, is appropriate for the EFL students of novice level in Taiwan in learning word pronunciation.
