Reasons Why I Read Sense and Sensibility

At first peek of the book Sense and Sensibility, I have no idea what this book is about. Although it took me couples of days to finish reading this book, I felt amazed by the writer Jane Austen. Her book is well written and I got motivated and surprised while reading every page. There are some reasons why I appreciate this amazing book.

First, the sophisticated love stories encouraged me to keep reading it. I could not guess what's going on next when first time reading it. Its plot is about complicated love stories, which I thought must be fancy tales at first. However, in reality, things like that do happen. For example, in this book, the handsome Willoughby marries for money. In reality, one of my friends, Queenie, fell in love also because the guy is way too handsome. However, the guy is too poor that he needs Queenie to pay his debt. After a few months, the handsome guy truly fell in love with another woman, Serena. Their relationship did not go further because the handsome guy is too poor to commit marriage. After all, it’s all about money. Eventually, my friend Queenie married to the handsome guy. This story is so similar to the one in Sense and Sensibility. Actually, there are lots of tragic love stories in reality like the ones in this book. I’ve learned much from them, such as not to trust handsome guys unless they show true heart.

Second, the development of different characters is fabulous. Because of the author’s vivid description I became fond of some characters, but disliked some others. For example, from the book title we know that Elinor represents “sense” and Marianne represents “sensibility”. I like Marianne more than Elinor because I don’t believe in love anymore. Marianne, who is generous, amiable and interesting, thinks the same way as I do. She once said that “the more I know the world, the more I am convinced that I shall never see a man I can really love.” However, Marianne turns out marrying to another guy, Brandon, who is her long-standing admirer. As for me, I’m still waiting for the true love to come but I truly don’t believe in men.

Third, I can gain more knowledge about love by reading this book. I’ve learned a lot from the epic love stories in the book. For example, I would tell Marianne to look before she leaps. Marianne is too sensitive and she does not think of the results. If I were Marianne, I would think the moderate way. In this book, Marianne once said, “I could not be happy with a man whose taste did not in every point coincide with my own. He must enter in all my feelings; the same books, the same music must charm us both.” However, I believe that love is not all about the same feeling that each other feels. You cannot expect your partner to be just like you. There’s no surprise if everything is the same, it would become boring in the rest of your life.

In conclusion, this amazing book had made my day better. I enjoyed reading it because of the reasons above. To sum up, in Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austin highlighted the difficult reality for woman in her time, and even the status of women. And she told us that there were limited decisions to choose in her time when it came to surviving by themselves because they had to depend on men. At least the story ends up with happy ending, with everybody marrying everybody.
