A Teacher’s Pet

Rex Jason

A teacher’s pet refers to a student who is perceived to be a favorite by the teacher or a person who is treated as a favorite by one in authority. Someone likes to be in this characteristic group, but someone really hates this kind of person or even feels annoyed by them. As for me, I quite like a teacher’s pet because I don’t think this is a bad behavior or a false display of affection. The majority does not like a teacher’s pet due to many reasons, so I am going to cite an instance of it and also to stand up for my viewpoint on a teacher’s pet.

Those people who do not like a teacher’s pet might think they are the students that the teacher adores forever. The sad thing is that they don't even have to get good grades and just do numerous things that teachers like, and then they will gain the teacher’s praise and affection. The action they do such as always taking notes during the class, buying an expensive gift for their teacher that they would not have for their mother, studying all night long just so they wouldn't let the teacher feel disappointed with them, observing and yelling at all the troublemakers when the teacher is out of the room, etc. After doing these things, they might subtly mention their own good acts to keep themselves in line where the teacher can overhear and notice. As a matter of course, these behaviors will cause lots of disgust in people and they think these deeds are fake because they do not come from their sincere heart.

Let’s get back to my definition of a teacher’s pet. I will not say those deeds are hypocritical and I would like to define it as “respectful.” Being the descendants of Chinese, honoring the teacher and respecting their teachings are deservedly proper and right. Therefore, how can we say those deeds are dishonest? For example, if a teacher asks, “Can anyone please pass out these papers?” And then one of the students says, “Of course I can. by the way, you look absolutely gorgeous today, ma’am.” I would not say this is disgusting conversation. On the contrary, they are good compliments, not bad comportments. Everyday saying words of praise to teachers is not a shame and it is just a beautiful laud to make teachers have a fabulous day. The persons who always ignore and are indifferent to teachers are definitely so-called a shame.

To sum up, a teacher’s pet is not a really bad word to describe a person. The behavior of a teacher’s pet does not hurt anyone; it just makes some people feel uncomfortable. But it is not a big deal, right?
