Condoms Should Not Be Sold on Campus

Christine Syu

Last year, the education department of Taichung County held a debate competition. The title was “Should there be condom vending machines on campuses?” Supporters thought people should face this sex issue with an open mind; nevertheless, opponents thought selling condoms on campus was another way to embolden children to have sex behavior. My opinion on this issue is that selling condoms on campus should not be allowed.

Supporters think selling condoms on campus could decrease the unmarried pregnancy rate, but I don’t agree. I think there are better ways to decrease the unmarried pregnancy rate. For example, parents can chat with their children about sex, and give them the correct sex opinions; meanwhile, school can provide sex education to give children healthy views about sex.

Supporters also think selling condoms is good since youngsters can use them to protect themselves. It is right to use condoms but selling condoms on campus will encourage students to have premature sex. If people have sex too early, it will hurt their reproductive organs. According to biology, our reproductive organs become mature between twenty to twenty-two years old.

In conclusion, it is not suitable to put condoms vending machines on campus; maybe it is very convenient and youngsters can have better protection if they want to have sex. But selling condoms on campus will send the youngsters the wrong message about sex and that they don’t need to concentrate on study. The main purpose of students’ coming to school is to receive education is not to seek a love mate.
