Story-telling

Tanya Lin

When I was small, I liked to sleep with my grandfather very much. The reason was that my grandfather always told me a story on bed. Now I have grown up; however, I still remember some interesting stories my grandfather told me. I will never forget those happy times when we were together. Like my grandfather, I also enjoy telling children stories because story-telling is like acting and it’s a way of teaching children.

I never get bored telling children stories for story-telling is like acting. When an actor is on the stage, he must become the character he plays in the drama. To express the spirit of the character, an actor changes his voice and disposition so that he could unite himself with the character. Likewise, a story-teller also needs to play different roles when he’s telling a story. To play the characters in the stories to the life, a story-teller must change his tone and facial expression if it’s necessary. This is why I like to tell stories. I get the chance to play many different roles at the same time and to experience different lives. Besides, children are really good auditors. I love to see their innocent eyes when we sit face to face.

Another reason for my interest in story-telling is that story-telling is a way of teaching children. As we know, many children like to listen to stories. When they listen to a story, they will have the picture of that story in their mind. Therefore, if the story has some lessons, children will learn them unconsciously. For example, Aesop’s fables are most children’s favorite. At the end of every fable there is always one proverb. Although some of these fables are short, they do have some meanings. If children realize these stories, they will surely learn some lessons. On the contrary, if I choose a story without good ending, children will complain to me that the story is not good because the villain in the story is still on the run. Thus, choosing a proper story is also important.

When I tell children a story, not only I but they are happy. By telling stories I learn how to share my feelings with people. As for children, they can learn something from the story. Though children won’t remember every story as they grow older, I believe that some stories will remain somewhere in their memories of childhood.
