Choosing a Rewarding Occupation

When people hear the phrase ‘a rewarding occupation,’ the first occupation that comes to their mind may be a charitable institution. There are many charitable institutions all over the world, and there are many in Taiwan, too. For instance, the International Federation of Red Cross, Lion Clubs, Tzu Chi Foundation, International Cooperation and Development Fund, etc. are well-known charitable institutions; however, I think the most rewarding occupation is the one which is really close to our lives. In the past, people recognized men as the householder of their families. But if we think more deeply, we will find out that the one who helps a man to reach achievement is a woman, a mother. There are three reasons why I think to be a mother is the most rewarding occupation.

The first is gaining a sense of achievement. It takes a lot of effort to raise kids and it does not only torture our mind but also consume our strength. However, it seems like an easy task to some mothers. A mother can be very patient to her kids. She teaches her children how to walk and speak. She teaches them what is right and what is wrong. She teaches them to be better men and women. Mothers do not ask for any payment or repayment from their children. Only if the children are healthy and can make a living by themselves will their mothers feel happy and satisfied.

The second reason is that being a mother is a dream coming true. To be women, we always wish that one day we can get married and have a sweet home. Therefore, when a woman becomes a mother, she will do her best to make her home completed. For instance, Mom always gets up early to make breakfast for our family even though she went to bed late the night before. After my brother and I go to school and Father goes to work, Mom goes to food markets or supermarkets to buy foods and necessities. After that, she has to go back home immediately to prepare dinner for Grandmother. After doing whole-day housework, Mom has to wash our clothes at the end of each day. Who has the strong willpower to do the strenuous housework except mothers?

The last reason that I think being a mother is the most rewarding job is that it is a period most women must pass. I think it is females’ honor to receive the important task from God, which is giving birth to a baby. It must be a memorable experience for a woman to have a life in her womb. When a woman is pregnant, she becomes a mother at the same time. In the ten months, mothers have to take care of themselves carefully. Therefore, maternal love starts to grow inside them. Also, they start to receive the responsibility to take good care of their children. I think if women do not give birth to a child, their life cannot be complete.

There are many kinds of rewarding occupations. And people feel committed to different occupations. In my opinion, when we feel happy and satisfied because of doing something useful and helpful to others, it is the most rewarding thing. If we can devote ourselves to this world and do not ask for payments, our life would become more peaceful and wonderful.
