School Rules: Eating in the classroom

In Taiwan, eating in the classroom is a very common thing in universities, because there is no such a school rule which forbids students’ eating in the classroom. However, in my opinion, eating in the classroom may cause a lot of problems for both teachers and students. And the following are the reasons why I disagree with eating in the classroom.

First, some food with strong smell would influence other students and the teacher. For example, stinky tofu, beef noodles or other special Taiwanese dishes. They are very popular and ordinary food in Taiwan. If you eat these kinds of food in the classroom, you would distract your classmates and even make them feel hungry.

Second, your eating in the classroom means that you are not concentrating on the teacher’s lecture. You would focus on your food and ignore what your teacher is talking about. You may not learn efficiently in this way.

Third, students always leave a lot of trash in the classroom. Many Taiwanese students lack sense of morality. Once they finish their food, they leave the garbage such as plastic bags or disposable tableware in the classroom instead of putting them away in the trash can.

Finally, I think eating in the classroom should be banned. Students should eat before or after the class and not eat during the class. Students have to respect their classmates and their teachers. I completely approve of the no eating rule in the classroom.
