Effects of a College Education

 Jerry Chou

College life is precious to many people because it may be the last time for them to be students. Students may spend their time studying, hanging out with friends, attending lots of activities, and so on. Students can become more independent, autonomous, and get ready for their future.

College students have to shoulder more responsibilities because they are young adults and there are some things that they need to deal with independently. Students have the choice to live on their own and make decisions by themselves, but they still have to follow the rules of the school. For example, students should take full responsibility for personal behaviors because they are adults now and they should not run away from problems.

Students get the chance of choosing elective subjects that they are interested in. High school students in Taiwan don’t get to choose what courses they want to take because the school already has an arranged syllabus for them. College students get to choose elective subjects that can help them with their future careers. In our school we can choose other departments’ elective courses. So we can gain some knowledge about other disciplines without any restrictions.

Students may begin to think what they want to do in the future and the classes they take may give them some directions. They may want to get a job right after they graduate or continue studying to get their Master’s degree or even PhD. Those who choose to find a job when they graduate may do the jobs that are related to their field or do something totally unrelated. For example, students from the English department may become a teacher if they are interested in teaching. For those who don’t have any interest in their major may do something else that they can make a living on. Those who choose to carry on with their studies may be really interested in the field of knowledge or for the requirement of their future career. For example, students who take interest in astronomy may carry on with their studies because they can do some in-depth research with the professors, which may also help them with their thesis.

College is not only a place where we can obtain and enhance knowledge but also a place to have fun and make new friends. Students have lots of resources and opportunities to gain knowledge, which is why college life is really precious to many people. So, I think that I need to cherish the rest of my time in college and not waste any of it.
