An Embarrassing Experience

Anna Peng

Generally speaking, my life is going smoothly; however, once I get a problem, it’s usually a big problem to me. There is evidence: In my senior high school, we had to recite a part of paragraph in our textbook every Tuesday, and the director of academic affairs decided who was going to recite on the stage of the auditorium by drawing lots. It’s very embarrassing if the reciter forgot the contents, because there were about eight hundred students in the audience seats and they were waiting for his or her recitation.

I always prepared hard, in case I was the unfortunate one to recite on the stage. However, once, our class got a notice suddenly that we had to gather in the auditorium and recite the paragraph just in a few minutes. “What? We don’t know there is a recitation this week!” “Which paragraph is going to be recited?” Everyone was shocked and opened the textbook quickly. After minutes, all students gathered in the auditorium. “Don’t worry. There are so many students, the probability of which we have to recite on the stage is too low, ” I consoled my classmates. Actually, I had a bad vibe that I was the unfortunate one who had to go on the stage.“Class 202, number 38.” The master of ceremonies said. My mind was blank at that time and I asked my classmates again and again, “Me? It’s me?Really?” I couldn’t believe my ears and my feet haven’t been so heavy before. “There is...erm...” I had no idea about the paragraph because it was a classical Chinese. When I looked down on the stage, everyone was staring at me with silence, and I really wanted to disappear from the stage. My hands kept trembling and I felt the time was frozen. Finally, I cobbled together the paragraph with the help of the director of academic affairs. He gave me hints every time when I turned silent.

“Who is she?” “I had seen her before.” I heard some voice on my way back to our class. I was ashamed and wanted to go home during all day because of the embarrassing recitation. After that, I prepared my recitation quite seriously and tried to pretend that nothing had happened. I was very embarrassed at that time, but now, it isnot a big deal to me, because I know everything is going to be alright, and people won’t remember it for a long time. Still, it’s a special experience for me.
