Book vs. Movie Version of Harry Potter

Ula Chen

Harry Potter is a series of book of fantasy, and it has been made into movies. I had already finished reading those books when I was a junior high school student. Both the books and the movies are famous. But I haven’t finished watching the movies. I think there are a lot of differences between the books and the movies that have caused different imaginations in me.

The first difference is my imagination of the character of Voldemort or You-Know-Who. When I read the book, I thought he is very horrible. He looks like a ghost but he doesn’t look disgusting in my imagination. However, in the movie, he looks very disgusting. He doesn’t have a nose and his skin is very pale. The character in the movie makes me very uncomfortable.

Another difference is the house of Hagrid in my imagination. In the movie, the house is a small cabin house with a small well in front of it. But when I read the books, I thought Hagrid lived in a big cabin house and the house has very strange exterior appearance. At night, this house has different appearances and there are many monsters living next to his house. This house is interesting to me.

The biggest difference in my imagination is the plot of Quiddich Match. Quiddich Match is a very brilliant sport in the book. When I read the book, I felt that I was playing the sport in the sky at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But this part is not depicted well in the movie. In the movie, only a little time was devoted to showing in the end the score of the match. I am very sad that I can’t see more detailed depiction of the playing of the sport in the movie.

One of my friends said that some of the scenes in the imagination of both writers and readers are difficult to materialize in the real world. I think it is true. It is a little regret that there are many imaginations that cannot be realized in the real world. If so, the movies are probably good enough.
