The Effects of Living at Home

Tanya Chien

Before I became a college student, I’d never thought of the question whether I should live in the school dormitory or live at home. It was because I didn’t predict that I would enter a school which was far from my home. At last, I chose to live at home. And there are some problems because of my living at home.

One of the effects is that it wastes a lot of time to commute. Whenever I went to school or went back home, it took me approximately one hour and thirty minutes. As other students were still sleeping, I’d already got up and got on the bus. The worst thing was the time which I used to commute was totally wasted, because it’s hard for me to do anything on the bus.

The second effect is that it’s hard for me to join school clubs. Most extracurricular activities were held late, so I couldn’t join them. If I joined the club activities, I would have to go back home late. And if I had something to do on that day such as homework, I would have to stay up to finish it.

Another effect is that it’s really tiring to commute by bus and MRT. Whenever I went to school or got home, I had to take the bus first, then take the MRT, and then take the bus again. No matter taking the bus or MRT, it’s not possible for me to have a seat. Therefore, it meant that I always stood for one hour and thirty minutes. As I got home or got to school, my hands and legs all felt very uncomfortable. I always felt so tired that I didn’t even want to move.

Because of living at home, there were some negative effects. However, I think it is worth for me to pay those prices. I think there is nothing more important than living at home, because I can eat regularly and sleep comfortably, and I can get together with my family. I never regret my choice.
