The Dormitories in My School

Most Universities provide dormitories for students. Usually there are all girls or boys in one dormitory. Recently, we have a new dormitory building because of more and more foreign students. The difference is that the new dormitory accommodates both boys and girls. It’s hard to decide if single-sex dorm or co-ed dorm is better. Maybe we should make a comparison between them and identify the advantages and disadvantages of them.

The first difference is the issue of freedom and security. In the girls’ dormitory, girls can walk on the hallway with shorts or without underwear. Also, as there are no boys in the dormitory, girls do not have to worry too much about their safety. In a coed dormitory, we have to be careful in our dress and boys cannot wear underpants walking on the hallway without feeling embarrassed. And because we can’t know who will show up in the dormitory, it is more difficult to ensure the security of the dormitory. In comparison with the girls’ dormitory, the coed dormitory is freer but more dangerous.

The second difference is convenience. Sometimes we may have to discuss schoolwork with classmates. Living in the coed dormitory, we can not only discuss with female classmates but also male ones. In the girls’ dormitory, we can only discuss with girl classmates. In this aspect, I think the coed dormitory is superior to the girls’ dormitory because we can learn more varied opinions as boys and girls usually have different views about things. Also, we can have more chances to learn to interact with the opposite sex.

The third difference is on the practical aspect. In the girls’ dormitory, we only have girl roommates. At the end of the semester, girls have to move their baggage by themselves without the help of strong boys. In the coed dormitory, girls can ask boys for help. Because boys are stronger, the baggage can be handled quickly.

Both single-sex and coed dormitories have advantages and disadvantages. In our school, both types are convenient and cheap for students. As for me, I like the girls’ dorm better because I can do whatever I like in the dormitory. I feel living in the girls’ dorm is safer, more convenient and more comfortable.
